The HERTEL 74147463 is a reduced shank cobalt drill bit designed for drilling tough, high-tensile-strength materials where standard high-speed steel bits fall short. The drill body measures 37/64 inch (0.5781 inch decimal) in cutting diameter with a reduced 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing it to seat in standard 1/2 inch capacity chucks despite the larger cutting diameter. The 118-degree standard point angle suits general-purpose drilling across a wide range of ferrous metals. An oxide straw finish provides mild corrosion resistance during storage and service. Overall length is 6 inches with a 3 inch spiral flute length, and the right-hand cut geometry is compatible with conventional drill press and hand-drill operation.
This bit is suited to metalworking and fabrication environments where operators regularly drill through alloy steels, stainless steels, and other tough high-tensile-strength materials. The cobalt construction maintains hardness at elevated temperatures generated during heavy-feed drilling, making it a practical choice for machine shops, maintenance trades, and industrial fabrication. The reduced shank design extends the range of compatible drill chucks without requiring a larger capacity machine.
Designed for use in 1/2 inch capacity drill chucks on drill presses, magnetic drills, and hand drills. Intended for drilling tough high-tensile-strength ferrous and alloy materials. No coolant system required per manufacturer specification.
A licensed machinist or qualified metalworking professional should select feed rate and spindle speed appropriate to the workpiece material and bit diameter before use. Secure the workpiece fully before drilling to prevent rotation or movement. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use, as cobalt bits used on hard alloys can develop edge wear that is not always visible without close examination. Follow applicable shop safety standards and use appropriate eye protection and chip guarding at all times.
