The HERTEL 74130923 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for high-speed drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to Size 40 (0.0980 inches), it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust requirements compared to conventional 118-degree points. The overall length is 1-13/16 inches with a 13/16-inch flute length, making it well suited for tight-clearance drilling operations on turret lathes, CNC machining centers, and screw machines. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without adapters. Right-hand cutting with a regular spiral flute pattern. Intended for use by machinists and tool-room technicians working with stainless steel, high-temperature alloys, and other hard ferrous metals.
This bit is sized for screw machine and short-hole drilling applications where a stub-length tool provides rigidity and reduced deflection. The cobalt construction handles work-hardening materials that would prematurely dull standard high-speed steel tooling. Typical install environments include production machine shops, maintenance shops, and contract manufacturing settings where wire-gauge drill sizes are routinely needed for tapping prep, clearance holes, and precision bore work in the 0.0000 to 0.1000 inch decimal range.
Designed as an OEM-style screw machine length drill bit suitable for use in standard drill chucks, turret lathes, drill presses, and CNC machining centers accepting straight-shank tooling in the wire-gauge size range.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before starting the cut. Use appropriate cutting fluid for cobalt tooling when drilling stainless or high-temperature alloys to extend tool life. Ensure the workpiece is firmly clamped before drilling to prevent movement that can chip the split point. Inspect the cutting edges for wear regularly; cobalt bits can be resharpened on a drill grinding fixture designed for split-point geometry.
