The HERTEL 74130576 is a screw machine length (stub-length) drill bit designed for high-speed drilling in metal fabrication and machining applications. It is built from cobalt high-speed steel (HSCO), which provides greater heat resistance than standard HSS, making it well-suited for drilling harder ferrous metals, stainless steel, and abrasive alloys. The 135-degree split point reduces thrust requirements and starts drilling without a center punch. At 2-3/8 inches overall length, this stub-length geometry provides added rigidity over jobber-length bits, reducing deflection in production drilling scenarios. It is sold individually as a single-piece unit.
This drill bit is used in screw machine operations, drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power drills where a shorter, stiffer bit is preferred. The size 6 wire gauge designation corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.2040 inches, placing it in the 0.2000 to 0.2500 inch range. It is appropriate for machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians drilling carbon steel, alloy steel, cast iron, and similar hard materials. The right-hand cutting direction and regular spiral flute geometry are compatible with standard drill press and CNC spindle setups.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or standard production drill bit for use in screw machines, drill presses, and CNC machining setups requiring a wire-gauge stub-length cobalt drill in the 0.2000 to 0.2500 inch decimal diameter range.
Install into a properly sized drill chuck or collet and verify shank seating before operation. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured before drilling to prevent movement and bit breakage. Use cutting fluid or coolant appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tool life, particularly when drilling stainless or alloy steels. Replace the bit if significant edge wear or chipping is observed, as a dull cobalt bit generates excess heat that can work-harden the material surface.
