The HERTEL 74130410 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for high-speed drilling in tough materials including stainless steel, hardened alloys, and other hard-to-machine metals. It measures 15/32 inches (0.4688 inches decimal) in diameter with a 3-5/8 inch overall length and a 2-1/8 inch flute length. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust requirements, making it well-suited for production environments. The straw finish indicates the cobalt steel has been heat-treated, offering improved wear resistance over standard HSS bits. Right-hand cutting with a regular spiral flute pattern, this bit fits standard drill chucks via its straight cylindrical shank. It is installed and used by machinists, maintenance technicians, pipefitters, and HVAC fabricators working with structural and mechanical components.
This bit is a screw machine length format, meaning it is shorter and more rigid than jobber-length bits, which reduces deflection during drilling in metal plate, structural steel, and similar materials. It is appropriate for bench drill presses, CNC drill presses, and hand-held drill motors where chuck capacity accommodates a straight shank up to 15/32 inches. Typical applications include drilling bolt clearance holes, conduit knockouts in metal enclosures, and fabrication work in mechanical and electrical trade shops. The web-thinned parallel web configuration improves chip clearance and reduces heat buildup during extended drilling cycles.
Designed as an OEM-style screw machine length drill bit in the 0.4500 to 0.5000 inch decimal size range, compatible with any drill press or hand drill with a chuck capacity sufficient for a 15/32 inch straight shank.
Install and tighten the shank securely in a drill chuck using a chuck key before operation. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent rotation or movement. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel or hardened alloys to extend bit life and manage heat. Inspect the split point for wear or chipping between uses, as a damaged point reduces accuracy and increases the risk of workpiece damage.
