The HERTEL 72294176 is a high-speed steel (HSS) chucking reamer designed to produce accurate, finished-diameter holes in metal workpieces. Built to wire size number 17, this reamer cuts to a decimal diameter of 0.1730 inches, placing it in the 0.1500 to 0.1999 inch diameter range. It features six spiral flutes with a right-hand spiral direction, providing smooth chip evacuation and consistent surface finish on through-holes and blind holes alike. The straight-cylindrical shank seats directly into drill chucks, collets, or floating holders on manual or CNC machine tools. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and precision machine operators use this reamer as a finishing step after drilling to bring a bore to final dimensional tolerance.
This chucking reamer is suited for general metalworking applications in job shops, production machining environments, and maintenance repair operations. The wire size 17 designation makes it a common choice for finishing holes that accept standard fasteners, pins, or press-fit components in that diameter class. It is intended for use in steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar machinable materials where a reamed finish is required. The straight-cylindrical shank allows it to mount in any standard drill chuck or collet without special adapters.
Designed as an OEM-style chucking reamer for use in standard drill presses, lathes, milling machines, and CNC machining centers equipped with a drill chuck or collet capable of accepting a straight-cylindrical shank in the 0.1730 inch diameter range.
Chucking reamers are installed by licensed machinists or qualified machine operators. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool holder is clean and free of debris before mounting the reamer. Always ream at the correct speed and feed for the workpiece material — running a reamer too fast or feeding too slowly accelerates wear and degrades hole finish. The pre-drilled hole should be sized to leave only the recommended stock for reaming; removing excessive material in a single reaming pass can cause chatter and dimensional inaccuracy.
