The HERTEL 72290232 is a straight-flute chucking reamer ground to a wire size No. 23 diameter of 0.1540 inches. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, it is designed for precision hole finishing in drill press, lathe, or CNC chuck applications. The straight-cylindrical shank allows secure clamping in standard drill chucks or collets. With four right-hand flutes and a 1-inch cutting length, this reamer delivers consistent bore geometry and surface finish in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Overall length is 3.125 inches, and the tool weighs approximately 0.1 pounds. Machinists and toolroom technicians use this style of reamer as a finishing step after drilling to bring a hole to final dimensional tolerance.
This chucking reamer is suited for machine-driven reaming in light manufacturing, maintenance, and toolroom environments. The wire-size designation targets small-diameter bore finishing where decimal-inch drill bits or jobber reamers may not achieve the required fit. Typical applications include bearing seats, dowel pin holes, and precision clearance holes in steel, aluminum, brass, and similar materials. The straight flute geometry works well in through-holes and shorter blind holes where chip evacuation is managed by coolant or compressed air.
Designed as a standard wire-size chucking reamer for use in drill presses, lathes, and machining centers equipped with a drill chuck or straight-shank collet capable of holding a straight-cylindrical shank in the 0.1540-inch diameter range.
This tool is installed by a machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine before securing the shank in the chuck or collet. Ensure the shank is fully seated and the chuck is tightened to prevent runout, which is critical at small diameters. Always pre-drill the hole to the appropriate undersize before reaming, and apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve surface finish.
