The HERTEL 72290166 is a straight-flute chucking reamer designed for precision hole finishing in metalworking applications. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this reamer produces accurate, smooth bores to a diameter of 0.177 inches (Wire Size 16). The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in drill chucks or machine collets. At 3.375 inches overall length with a 1.125-inch flute length, it is sized for light-duty reaming passes in relatively shallow through-holes and blind holes. Right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional CNC and manual machine spindle rotation. Six flutes provide a good balance of chip clearance and surface finish quality.
This chucking reamer is intended for machine use in drilling and milling operations where hole diameter tolerance and finish are critical. Typical applications include finish-reaming pre-drilled pilot holes in steel, aluminum, brass, and similar machinable metals. It suits production shops, tool rooms, and maintenance machinists working with small-diameter precision bores in the 0.150 to 0.199 inch range. The straight shank makes it compatible with standard drill chucks and ER-style collet systems commonly found on lathes, drill presses, and machining centers.
Designed as an OEM-style chucking reamer for use in drill chucks or collet holders accepting a straight-cylindrical shank at the 0.177-inch diameter class; consult machine tooling specifications to confirm shank clearance and chuck capacity before installation.
Chucking reamers are installed by machinists or tool-room technicians in powered machine tools — lathes, drill presses, or machining centers. Always ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before mounting or removing the reamer from its chuck or collet. Use a properly sized collet or a drill chuck rated for the shank diameter, and verify runout is within acceptable limits before taking a reaming pass. Never attempt to remove significant stock with a reamer; pilot holes should be pre-drilled to leave only a few thousandths of an inch for the reaming operation.
