The HERTEL 72034879 is a straight-flute chucking reamer designed to produce precise, finished bores in metalworking applications. Ground from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this reamer measures 0.4870 inches in diameter with an 8-inch overall length and a 2-inch flute length. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard drill chucks or collet holders. With 6 flutes cutting in a right-hand direction, it delivers smooth material removal and accurate hole sizing in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians rely on this style of reamer for close-tolerance finishing passes on drilled or bored holes.
This chucking reamer is suited for use in drill presses, lathes, and machining centers where a standard straight-shank mounting is appropriate. It is used in general-purpose machine shop environments, maintenance and repair operations, and production settings where holes in the 0.4870-inch range require a clean, finished bore. The right-hand cutting direction is compatible with conventional spindle rotation, making setup straightforward. No special toolholding beyond a standard chuck or collet is required for typical applications.
Designed as a general-purpose chucking reamer for use in any machine tool accepting a straight-cylindrical shank, including drill presses, engine lathes, turret lathes, and vertical machining centers.
This reamer is installed by a machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the chuck or collet is clean and properly tightened before mounting the tool. A reaming allowance of 0.005 to 0.015 inches of material removal is standard practice for chucking reamers; the specific allowance should be determined by the machinist based on workpiece material and required tolerance. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve surface finish.
