The HERTEL 62848494 is a single-end roughing end mill designed for aggressive material removal in milling applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with a TiAlN coating, it delivers heat resistance and edge retention during heavy cuts in alloy steels, stainless steels, and other tough workpiece materials. The 1/4 inch cutting diameter pairs with a 3/8 inch shank and three spiral flutes in a fine-pitch configuration. The fine pitch is optimized for chip control in interrupted cuts and full-slot operations. Right-hand cutting and right-hand flute direction are standard. This tool is installed and operated by machinists and CNC tooling professionals in job shop and production environments.
This end mill suits vertical machining centers, manual knee mills, and CNC milling setups where a 3/8 inch collet or end mill holder is available. The 5/8 inch length of cut supports shallow-to-medium depth passes, making it a practical choice for profiling, slotting, and roughing passes on ferrous and exotic alloy workpieces. The center-cutting geometry allows plunge entry where required. Single-end construction means the tool is replaced rather than flipped when worn.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit roughing end mill for machines equipped with a 3/8 inch end mill holder, collet chuck, or milling arbor accepting a straight shank tool.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully de-energized and locked out before changing tooling. Seat the 3/8 inch shank fully into the holder to the recommended minimum engagement depth per the holder manufacturer before torquing the set screw or collet nut. Do not exceed the tool's rated depth-of-cut for the workpiece material — consult the applicable speeds-and-feeds data for M42 cobalt end mills when programming the cut.
