The HERTEL 61698734 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in metal, wood, and plastic applications. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish, it runs at a 118-degree standard point angle for general-purpose cutting. The shorter overall length of 5.25 inches compared to a jobber-length bit provides increased rigidity and reduced deflection, making it well suited for drill press and CNC lathe work where stub-length tooling is preferred. Two right-hand spiral flutes with a 3xD flute-to-diameter ratio efficiently clear chips during through-hole and blind-hole operations. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks without modification.
This bit is used across machining, fabrication, and maintenance trades wherever a 13/16-inch diameter hole is required in moderate-hardness workpieces. The screw machine length format is common in production environments, turret lathes, and bench-mounted drill presses where rigidity matters more than reach. The oxide coating provides light lubricity and corrosion resistance during dry or minimally lubricated cutting. General-purpose machinists, tool-and-die shops, and maintenance technicians working in light manufacturing settings are the primary users of this tool.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit conforming to ANSI specifications, compatible with any drill press, lathe turret, or CNC machining center equipped with a standard drill chuck accepting a straight cylindrical shank in the 13/16-inch diameter range.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck jaws before tightening to avoid runout and premature bit wear. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is powered down before changing tooling. Apply cutting fluid or a suitable lubricant when drilling ferrous materials to extend tool life and improve hole finish. Inspect the cutting edges before use and discard or resharpen bits showing chipping, excessive wear, or heat discoloration.
