The HERTEL 48538136 is a short-series threaded shank drill bit designed for precision drilling in low-tensile strength materials. It carries a No. 20 wire gauge size with a decimal equivalent of 0.1610 inches and features a 135-degree split point for fast engagement and reduced walking on entry. The 1/4-28 threaded hex shank provides a secure, positive lock in compatible quick-change drill holders. The bit is manufactured from high speed steel with an oxide coating that offers basic corrosion resistance and lubricity during drilling operations. Right-hand cutting with a regular spiral flute pattern makes this a standard workhorse for production and field drilling tasks performed by machinists, aircraft mechanics, and sheet metal tradespeople.
This bit is suited for drilling into aluminum, mild steel, plastics, and other low-tensile strength materials common in light fabrication, MRO, and aerospace sheet metal work. The short-series overall length of 1.25 inches and 9/16-inch flute length give it added rigidity in tight-clearance applications where a standard jobber-length bit would be impractical. The NAS 965 Type B specification aligns it with aerospace and military fastener drilling standards, making it appropriate for applications where controlled hole geometry is required. The 1/4-28 threaded shank is standard for aircraft-grade quick-change systems and inline pneumatic drills.
Designed for use with 1/4-28 threaded quick-change drill holders and pneumatic inline drills that accept NAS 965 Type B threaded shank tooling.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or mechanics familiar with threaded shank tooling systems. Ensure the threaded shank is fully engaged and torqued per the drill holder manufacturer specifications before operation. Secure the workpiece properly and use appropriate cutting fluid for the material being drilled to extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if the split point shows signs of wear or chipping.
