The HERTEL 44838811 is a single-end roughing end mill designed for aggressive material removal in milling operations. Manufactured from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it provides increased heat and wear resistance compared to standard HSS tooling, making it well suited for harder work materials and demanding cutting conditions. The 1/2 inch diameter cutter features 4 flutes with a fine pitch and a bright, uncoated finish. With a length of cut of 0.625 inches and an overall length of 2.625 inches, this tool fits standard milling setups where a compact, rigid profile is needed. Right-hand cutting and right-hand flute direction are standard. Installed and changed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals.
This roughing end mill is intended for use in vertical and horizontal milling machines, machining centers, and manual knee mills. The fine-pitch configuration produces a finer chip load per tooth at high feed rates and suits ferrous metals, alloy steels, and similar materials where tool life under heat is a priority. The 1/2 inch shank diameter matches the 1/2 inch mill diameter, allowing direct chucking in standard collets or end mill holders without a reducer. It is a single-end tool, meaning it is not reversible and should be replaced when the cutting end is worn.
Designed as a direct-mount roughing end mill for use in any milling machine or machining center equipped with a 1/2 inch collet, end mill holder, or Weldon-style holder.
Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully into the holder and torque the set screw or collet nut per the holder manufacturer specification. Confirm runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut, as excessive runout accelerates wear on cobalt tooling. This tool is not designed for plunge cutting due to its non-centercutting geometry.
