The HERTEL 42213 is a screw machine length cobalt drill bit designed for drilling into hard and abrasion-resistant metals. Built from M35 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers greater heat resistance than standard HSS bits, making it well-suited for applications where tooling runs hot or workpiece hardness causes rapid wear. The 135-degree split point geometry reduces thrust force and self-centers without a pilot hole. An oxide straw finish provides mild lubricity and corrosion resistance. At 3.4375 inches overall length with a 2.0625-inch spiral flute, the screw machine length body is shorter and more rigid than jobber-length equivalents, reducing deflection in close-quarters drilling.
This drill bit is intended for production and maintenance drilling in hardened materials, heat-treatable alloy steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloy. The shorter screw machine length profile suits drill press, milling machine, and CNC turret applications where minimal overhang and maximum rigidity are priorities. It is commonly used by machinists, tool-and-die tradespeople, and industrial maintenance technicians working on high-strength fastener holes, fixture plates, and structural stainless components. The regular spiral flute handles chip evacuation efficiently in these demanding base materials.
Designed for use in drilling hardened materials, heat-treatable alloyed steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloy; fits any standard drill chuck or collet accepting a 7/16-inch shank diameter.
This bit is installed and operated by machinists or maintenance technicians using a drill press, lathe, milling machine, or CNC turret equipped with a compatible chuck or collet. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and confirm runout is within acceptable tolerance for the application. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material to extend tool life, even though the bit does not require through-coolant. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or heat discoloration before reuse on critical-dimension holes.
