The HERTEL 42204 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for drilling into hard and abrasion-resistant materials. It measures 23/64 inch (0.3594 inches) in diameter with an overall length of 3.0625 inches and a flute length of 1.75 inches. Built from M35 cobalt steel with an oxide straw finish, it handles elevated cutting temperatures better than standard high-speed steel. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and allows for drilling without a center punch in most applications. The regular spiral flute promotes chip evacuation during through-hole drilling. This bit is suited for production and maintenance environments where tool life in tough materials is a priority.
The HERTEL 42204 is intended for use on hardened materials, heat-treatable alloyed steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloys. Screw machine length bits are shorter than jobber-length bits, which increases rigidity and reduces deflection in close-tolerance drilling on mills, drill presses, and screw machines. This geometry makes the bit a common choice for machine shop, maintenance, and fabrication work where hole accuracy and bit stability in hard stock are required.
Designed as a screw machine length drill bit in the 0.3500 to 0.4000 inch diameter range, suitable for use in standard drill chucks on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and manual screw machines accepting 23/64 inch shanks.
Installation of this drill bit is performed by machinists and maintenance technicians using standard drill press, mill, or screw machine equipment. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify runout is within acceptable limits for the application. Use appropriate cutting fluid when drilling stainless steel or titanium to manage heat buildup and extend tool life. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use, as cobalt bits used on hardened materials are subject to edge chipping if feed rates or speeds are not properly set.
