The HERTEL 42177 is a screw machine length cobalt drill bit designed for drilling into hard and difficult-to-machine materials. Built from M35 cobalt high-speed steel with an oxide straw finish, it measures 3/32 inch (0.0938 inches) in diameter with an overall length of 1.75 inches and a flute length of 0.75 inches. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and thrust on entry, making it well suited for production drilling applications where accuracy and tool life are critical. The spiral flute design promotes chip evacuation during cutting.
This drill bit is intended for use on hardened materials, heat-treatable alloyed steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloys. The screw machine length — shorter than a jobber bit — provides added rigidity in tight or confined drilling setups, such as drill press fixtures, CNC machines, and turret lathes. It is a common choice in machine shops, maintenance facilities, and fabrication environments where short-length rigidity is required for small-diameter work.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use screw machine drill bit for applications involving hardened materials, heat-treatable alloyed steels, stainless steel, and titanium alloy workpieces in standard drill chuck and collet setups accepting 3/32 inch shank diameters.
This bit is installed by machinists and tool-and-die technicians in drill presses, lathes, or CNC equipment. Secure the shank fully in a properly sized chuck or collet before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid for stainless steel and titanium workpieces to manage heat buildup and extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use — cobalt bits can develop micro-chipping when used on hardened materials without adequate feed and speed control.
