The HERTEL 41985 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for high-speed drilling in tough materials including hardened steels, stainless steel, cast iron, and heat-resistant alloys. Built from cobalt steel with an oxide and gold coating, it resists heat buildup and wear during extended use. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust force needed to start the cut. At 3.875 inches overall length with a 2.625-inch flute length, this is a standard jobber-length bit suited for general-purpose hole-making in metal fabrication, maintenance, and mechanical work. Licensed tradespeople and machinists working with ferrous metals reach for cobalt bits when high-speed steel falls short.
This drill bit fits applications where material hardness or heat generation exceeds what standard HSS bits handle reliably. Common uses include drilling into stainless steel fasteners, structural steel, hardened fastener plates, and similar ferrous workpieces. The straight cylindrical shank seats in standard 3-jaw drill chucks on both handheld and bench-mounted drilling equipment. The regular spiral flute geometry provides efficient chip evacuation in through-hole and blind-hole drilling setups across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general mechanical trade work.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use jobber-length drill bit for any standard 3-jaw drill chuck accepting straight cylindrical shanks in the 0.2000 to 0.2500 inch diameter range.
Installation of this bit requires a drill press, handheld power drill, or similar drilling equipment with a 3-jaw chuck. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped before drilling to prevent movement during cutting. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling ferrous metals to extend bit life and prevent heat-related work hardening of the material. Inspect the cutting edges before use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
