The HERTEL 41970 is a cobalt jobber length drill bit designed for drilling through hard metals, stainless steel, and abrasion-resistant materials encountered in mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing trade work. The bit measures 3/16 inch (0.1875 inch) in diameter with a 3-1/2 inch overall length and a 2-5/16 inch flute length. A 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust force needed to penetrate hard workpieces. The cobalt construction with an oxide and gold coating improves heat resistance and wear life compared to standard high-speed steel bits. Right-hand cutting with a regular spiral flute suits general-purpose through-hole drilling on the bench or in the field.
This bit is suited for trade professionals drilling metal framing, pipe hangers, electrical enclosures, equipment panels, and structural steel in residential and light commercial applications. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard 3-jaw drill chucks found on corded or cordless drills and drill presses. The 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio makes it a practical choice for moderate-depth holes typical of mechanical and electrical rough-in work where a general-purpose cobalt bit is specified.
Designed as a standard jobber length drill bit with a straight cylindrical shank, compatible with any 3-jaw drill chuck accepting shanks in the 3/16 inch range on corded drills, cordless drills, and drill presses.
Install and removal of drill bits should be performed with the drill or press powered off and unplugged or locked out per applicable OSHA lockout-tagout procedures. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and confirm chuck key is removed before starting. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless or hardened steel to preserve bit life. Discard bits showing visible flute damage or heat discoloration beyond normal use to avoid breakage under load.
