The HERTEL 18314 is a single-body countersink designed for producing conical seat recesses in metal and other materials prior to fastener installation. It features a 1/2-inch head diameter, an 82-degree included angle, and six flutes ground from high speed steel (HSS). The six-flute geometry distributes cutting load evenly, reduces chatter, and produces a cleaner finish compared to fewer-flute designs. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 1/2 inch in diameter and seats directly into standard drill chucks or quick-change holders. This tool is used by machinists, fabricators, and maintenance technicians working on metalworking and general assembly operations.
The HERTEL 18314 countersink is suited for deburring drilled holes and creating flat-bottomed conical recesses to accept flat-head fasteners at an 82-degree seating angle, which is the standard for inch-series flat-head screws. Typical applications include sheet metal fabrication, structural steel work, and general machine shop operations where flush fastener installation is required. It is run in a drill press, milling machine, or hand-held drill at controlled speeds appropriate for HSS tooling in the material being machined.
Designed as a standard countersink for use with inch-series flat-head fasteners requiring an 82-degree seating angle; compatible with any drill press, milling machine, or hand drill accepting a 1/2-inch straight-cylindrical shank.
Countersinks are installed and operated by machinists or trained technicians. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify chuck key is removed before powering the spindle. Use cutting fluid or lubricant appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve finish quality. Reduce spindle speed relative to a standard twist drill of the same diameter to prevent chatter and premature wear on the cutting edges.
