The HERTEL 16IR18UNHG225TR is a laydown-style threading insert designed for internal UN thread cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, this insert delivers the wear resistance and thermal stability required for consistent thread form across production runs. It cuts right-hand internal threads at 18 threads per inch (TPI) to the UN standard. The inscribed circle measures 3/8 inch (0.3750 inches) and the insert thickness is 0.1460 inches. Machinists and CNC operators working in job shops or production environments use this insert for threading bores in steel and other ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
This insert is suited for internal threading operations in residential and industrial machining applications where UN thread standards are required. The 16IR insert style fits compatible 16IR-series threading toolholders. The right-hand cutting geometry is appropriate for standard right-hand thread applications on lathes running conventional spindle direction. It is particularly useful in precision thread work where consistent flank contact and tool life are priorities across multiple parts.
Designed for use with 16IR-series internal threading toolholders that accept laydown-style inserts. Specific toolholder compatibility should be verified against the toolholder manufacturer's insert seating specifications.
Installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Ensure the lathe or turning center spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or clamp screw driver to seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket without overtightening. Verify thread pitch and insert orientation against the workpiece specification before initiating a threading pass.
