The HERTEL 16EL16UNJHG225T is a laydown threading insert designed for cutting external UNJ-profile threads on a lathe or CNC turning center. Built from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, this insert delivers extended tool life and heat resistance in demanding threading applications. It cuts at 16 threads per inch (TPI) and features a 3/8 inch (0.3750 inch) inscribed circle with a thickness of 0.146 inches. The left-hand configuration suits left-hand thread forms where conventional right-hand inserts cannot be used. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals working to aerospace and precision-mechanical tolerances will find this insert suited to controlled threading operations.
This insert is intended for external threading operations requiring the UNJ thread standard, which specifies a controlled root radius for improved fatigue resistance compared to standard UN threads. Typical applications include precision aerospace components, hydraulic fittings, and high-stress fastener production where thread root integrity is critical. The 16EL insert style is compatible with corresponding 16EL-designated toolholders. This is a left-hand insert and must be used in a toolholder configured for left-hand cutting direction.
Designed for use in 16EL-style laydown threading toolholders configured for left-hand external threading. Verify toolholder designation matches the 16EL insert style before installation.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or replacing the insert. Use the correct torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to achieve proper clamping torque — do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and can crack under excess clamp force. Confirm insert orientation matches the left-hand cutting direction of the toolholder before initiating any threading pass.
