The HERTEL 16704470 is a screw machine length drill bit sized at Letter S (0.3480 inches) with a 135-degree split-point tip ground from solid carbide. Screw machine length bits are shorter than jobber-length drills, which increases rigidity and reduces deflection in production and close-tolerance work. The 135-degree point geometry self-centers on most surfaces and eliminates the need for a center punch in many setups. Two slow-spiral flutes control chip evacuation in the tough, stringy, or abrasive materials this bit is designed for. The bright, uncoated finish is common on carbide tooling where coating adhesion is unnecessary or where the base substrate performs adequately on its own.
This drill bit is intended for machining cast iron, nickel alloys, stainless steel, titanium alloys, and tool steel — materials that demand the hardness and wear resistance of solid carbide. Typical applications include production drilling on CNC machining centers, manual mills, and drill presses where stub-length tooling is preferred for stability. It is well suited to machine shops, maintenance shops, and industrial environments where hard or abrasive workpieces are standard.
Designed for use with standard drill chucks and collet systems accepting a straight-cylindrical shank in the 0.3000 to 0.3500 inch decimal inch range. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron, nickel alloy, stainless steel, titanium alloy, and tool steel.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians familiar with carbide cutting tool handling. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet and verify runout before cutting, as carbide is brittle and sensitive to lateral shock loads. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing tooling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant directed at the cutting zone, and avoid interrupted cuts or excessive feed rates that can chip the carbide substrate.
