The HERTEL 1-221-0604 is a self-centering 3-jaw manual lathe chuck with a 6-inch body diameter, designed for use on manual engine lathes in machine shop and metalworking environments. The chuck body is constructed from cast iron and is rated to a maximum of 3,000 RPM. Jaw capacity ranges from 1/8 inch minimum to 6-19/32 inches maximum, covering a wide range of workpiece sizes. Axial runout is held to 0.0008 inches and radial runout to 0.0012 inches, providing the concentricity required for precision turning operations. Installation and operation are handled by machinists and lathe operators in production and job-shop settings.
This chuck is suited for both production and general-purpose turning applications on manual lathes. The reversible jaws expand the workholding range without requiring a jaw change, making it practical for shops that handle varied stock diameters. The 1.1635-inch through-hole diameter accommodates bar stock fed through the spindle. The 3-jaw self-centering design reduces setup time compared to independent-jaw chucks, making it a common choice for round and hex stock work in light to medium-duty machining operations.
Designed as an OEM-style manual lathe chuck replacement or upgrade for lathes accepting a 6-inch diameter 3-jaw self-centering chuck with an appropriate spindle nose mount. Verify spindle nose type and chuck back-plate compatibility before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the lathe manufacturer's mounting instructions for the specific spindle nose configuration. Power down and lock out the lathe before mounting or removing the chuck. Ensure the chuck back-plate mating surfaces are clean and free of chips or burrs before seating the chuck. Confirm all mounting fasteners are properly torqued per the back-plate manufacturer's specification before operation.
