The HERTEL 1-202-0401 is a self-centering 3-jaw manual lathe chuck designed for workholding on manual lathes in machine shop and production turning applications. The chuck measures 4 inches in diameter with a body length of 1-31/32 inches and a through-hole diameter of 0.7874 inches. It is rated to a maximum of 3,500 RPM and features solid, non-reversible jaws with a jaw height of 1-11/16 inches. The cast iron body provides rigidity and resistance to deformation under cutting loads. Axial runout is rated at 0.0006 inches and radial runout at 0.0008 inches, delivering the precision needed for consistent turned part accuracy. Machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers.
The HERTEL 1-202-0401 is suited for manual lathe operations in job shops, toolrooms, and light production environments. Its jaw capacity range spans from 1/8 inch minimum to 3-17/64 inches maximum, accommodating a broad range of round bar stock and cylindrical workpieces. The self-centering scroll mechanism simplifies and speeds up workpiece setup compared to independent-jaw chucks. The 4-inch diameter makes it a practical choice for benchtop and mid-size engine lathes where compact workholding is required.
Designed as a direct-mount replacement or upgrade workholding chuck for manual engine lathes accepting a 4-inch 3-jaw self-centering chuck. Verify spindle nose type and mounting bolt pattern on the lathe before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist familiar with lathe spindle nose configurations. Power down and lock out the lathe before removing or mounting any chuck. Ensure the spindle nose, backplate, and chuck mating surfaces are clean and free of chips or burrs before seating the chuck. Follow the lathe and chuck manufacturer guidelines for backplate fitting and fastener torque procedures.
