The HELICAL SOLUTIONS 46391 is a 3-flute solid carbide square end mill engineered for high-performance milling of aluminum and non-ferrous materials. It features a 1/2 inch cutting diameter, a 5/8 inch length of cut, and a 40-degree helix angle that promotes efficient chip evacuation in gummy, low-iron alloys. A Zplus ZrN (zirconium nitride) coating reduces built-up edge and extends tool life in non-ferrous applications. The variable index flute spacing minimizes chatter and improves surface finish at elevated feed rates. This is a single-end, right-hand cut tool with a straight 1/2 inch shank and an extended reach neck measuring 4.25 inches from the shank shoulder to the cutting edge.
The 46391 is suited for CNC machining centers running aluminum billet, plate, extrusion, and cast non-ferrous workpieces in job shop, production, and aerospace environments. The extended reach design allows clearance in deep-pocket and tall-wall operations where a standard-length end mill would not reach without interference. The centercutting geometry supports plunge entry, ramping, and helical interpolation. It is appropriate for both roughing and finishing passes in aluminum when paired with appropriate spindle speeds and chip loads for solid carbide tooling.
Designed for use on CNC machining centers with ISO or CAT/BT/HSK toolholding systems accepting a 1/2 inch straight shank. Primary workpiece material designation is N (aluminum and non-ferrous). Part of the Helical Solutions End Mills for Aluminum series: 3 Flute, Square, 40 degree Helix, Variable Pitch, Reduced Neck.
Installation should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician. Secure the straight shank in a collet chuck or end mill holder tightened to the toolholder manufacturer's specification — do not use a set-screw side-lock holder, as it can damage the shank or induce runout on a reduced-neck tool. Verify runout at the cutting tip before production to protect the variable-index geometry. Always confirm spindle speed, feed rate, and axial depth of cut against the manufacturer's published cutting data for this series before running the first part.
