The HELICAL SOLUTIONS 46096 is a 3-flute solid carbide square end mill designed for high-performance milling of aluminum and non-ferrous materials. It carries a 1/4 inch cutting diameter, a 3/8 inch length of cut, and a 40-degree helix angle that promotes efficient chip evacuation in gummy, low-iron alloys. The Zplus coating — a zirconium nitride (ZrN) finish — reduces built-up edge and extends tool life in non-ferrous applications. This is a single-end, right-hand cut tool with a straight 1/4 inch shank and a 3 inch overall length. Machinists and CNC operators in job shops, production facilities, and aerospace supply chains reach for this geometry when running aluminum finishing and profiling operations.
This end mill is suited to light-to-moderate material removal in aluminum, brass, copper, and similar non-ferrous workpiece materials. The reduced-neck, extended-reach geometry — with a 1.125 inch reach length — allows access to deeper pockets and stepped features without requiring a longer overall stick-out. The variable pitch (variable index) flute spacing helps suppress harmonic chatter during aggressive side-milling passes. It is a centercut tool, meaning it can plunge directly into material, adding versatility for ramp-entry and helical interpolation operations common in CNC milling workflows.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers and manual mills with standard 1/4 inch collets or end mill holders. Primary workpiece material designation is aluminum and non-ferrous (Material Code N). Part of the Helical Solutions End Mills for Aluminum series — 3 Flute, Square, 40 degree Helix, Variable Pitch, Reduced Neck.
Secure the shank in a clean, properly sized collet or end mill holder and torque to the tool holder manufacturer's specification — do not rely on feel alone. Inspect the collet and bore for runout before use, as elevated runout accelerates edge wear on carbide tools. Coolant-through is not supported on this tool; use flood coolant or air blast directed at the cutting zone when machining aluminum to prevent chip re-cutting. Always confirm spindle speed and feed rate against the manufacturer's recommended cutting data for the specific alloy and depth of cut before engaging the cut.
