The HELI-COIL K1185-14 is a free running wire thread insert designed to repair or reinforce 7/8-9 UNC threaded holes in metal components. Manufactured from stainless steel with a bright, uncoated finish, this coil-style insert restores stripped or damaged threads to full load-bearing capacity. At 1.312 inches overall length and a 1-1/2D length-to-diameter ratio, it provides a deep, stable thread engagement suitable for fasteners under vibration or cyclic loading. This is a tanged insert, meaning a notched tab at the base is used during installation and removed after seating. Installation requires a dedicated Heli-Coil tap and installation tool matched to the 7/8-9 thread size.
Free running inserts of this type are widely used in manufacturing, maintenance, and repair operations across industrial, automotive, aerospace, and heavy equipment applications. They are suited for situations where a tapped hole has been stripped, undersized, or requires thread reinforcement without replacing the parent component. The tanged design is compatible with standard tang break-off tools after the insert is driven to the correct depth. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and field service professionals working on aluminum, cast iron, magnesium, or other base materials install this type of insert routinely.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or repair insert for any application requiring a 7/8-9 UNC threaded hole restoration using the Heli-Coil free running insert system.
Installation requires a correctly sized Heli-Coil STI tap and a matching installation tool for the 7/8-9 thread size - standard taps will not produce the correct thread form. Ensure the parent material is securely fixtured and the tapped hole is cleaned of chips and debris before driving the insert. After the insert is flush or one half turn below the surface, use a tang break-off tool to snap and remove the installation tang from the bottom of the insert. Always follow applicable shop safety procedures and de-energize or lock out any equipment before performing thread repair on installed components.
