The HELI-COIL A1185-2CN492 is a free running helical wire thread insert designed to create or restore durable 8-32 UNC internal threads in parent materials. Manufactured from 304 stainless steel with a bright, uncoated finish, this insert provides corrosion resistance and long service life in demanding environments. At 0.492 inches overall length, it represents a 3D length-to-diameter ratio, making it suited for applications where deeper thread engagement is required for reliable fastener retention. Installation requires a proper HELI-COIL tap and installation tool for the 8-32 thread series.

Free running inserts are used where standard thread engagement is needed without locking torque. Common applications include thread repair in aluminum, magnesium, plastic, and other soft or damaged base materials across HVAC equipment housings, electrical enclosures, pump bodies, and general mechanical assemblies. The tanged design allows for installation using a standard drive tool; the installation tang is removed after the insert is seated.
