The HELI-COIL 7551-4 is a hand installation tool designed to drive helical thread inserts into pre-tapped holes without power equipment. It uses a Type II Prewinder mechanism that compresses the insert coil for controlled entry into the threaded bore, then releases it to lock into place. Built for 1/4-20 UNC thread size, this tool accepts both free-running and locking insert styles. The prewinder body measures 33/64 inches in diameter and 4-5/8 inches in length, with a spinner diameter of 2-17/32 inches. Machinists, mechanics, and field service techs use this tool wherever stripped or damaged threads need to be restored to original specification.
This tool is suited for thread repair and insert installation in residential and commercial maintenance, aerospace, automotive, and industrial service applications. It is the appropriate choice when installing 1/4-20 UNC helical thread inserts by hand, particularly in confined areas or on the bench where a power driver is impractical. It handles both free-running inserts for standard thread restoration and locking inserts where vibration resistance is required.
Designed for use with free-running and locking helical thread inserts in 1/4-20 UNC thread size, consistent with standard HELI-COIL insert series for that thread specification.
Thread insert installation is typically performed by machinists or mechanical technicians following the thread repair process: drill, tap, and install the insert. Before use, confirm the tapped hole matches the 1/4-20 UNC specification required by this tool. Load the insert onto the prewinder mandrel, align the tool with the tapped hole, and rotate the spinner clockwise until the insert is seated at the correct depth. Refer to the insert manufacturer's instructions for proper seating depth and tang break-off procedure if applicable.
