The HELI-COIL 7551-04 is a hand installation tool designed for inserting helical wire thread inserts into pre-tapped holes. Built as a Type II Prewinder, it winds the coil insert onto the mandrel before driving it into the threaded bore, ensuring accurate, controlled placement without cross-threading or insert damage. Compatible with both free-running and locking insert styles at the 4-40 UNC thread size, this tool is the correct instrument for technicians installing coil inserts in aluminum, magnesium, plastics, and other materials where thread repair or reinforcement is required. It weighs 0.33 pounds and features a prewinder body diameter of 3/8 inch and a spinner diameter of 2-9/32 inches.
This tool is used in maintenance, repair, and manufacturing environments wherever 4-40 UNC thread inserts must be hand-installed. Typical applications include aerospace component repair, electronics enclosure assembly, automotive trim fastening, and general metalworking where stripped or soft-material threads need reinforcement. The prewinder design suits bench-top and field use alike, particularly in tight-tolerance situations where powered tools are not appropriate. Machinists, assembly technicians, and maintenance mechanics working with UNC coil-thread systems rely on this style of hand tool for repeatable results.
Designed for use with free-running and locking helical wire thread inserts in the 4-40 UNC thread size. Suitable for coil insert installation in any material where a 4-40 UNC tapped hole has been prepared to the correct insert-ready diameter.
Installation is performed by hand and does not require powered equipment. Before installing, confirm the hole has been drilled and tapped to the proper oversize dimension specified for the coil insert being used. Wind the insert onto the prewinder mandrel fully before engaging the tapped hole, then rotate the spinner until the insert is seated at or slightly below the surface. After installation, remove the tang using the appropriate tang break-off tool if a tanged insert style is used.
