The HELI-COIL 5401-7 is a complete threaded insert repair kit designed to restore damaged or stripped internal threads to full load-bearing strength. The kit covers 7/16-14 UNC thread size and includes everything needed to complete the repair in the field: a drill bit, tap, installation tool, and tang removal tool. Insert length is 0.656 inches, with the kit providing 18 inserts total across three length sizes ranging from 0.438 inches to 0.875 inches. This type of repair is standard practice across HVAC, plumbing, and general mechanical service where fastener threads in aluminum, cast iron, or soft-metal housings have failed.
This kit is suited for residential and light commercial maintenance applications where thread damage is encountered during equipment service or overhaul. Typical install scenarios include compressor housing repairs, equipment base plates, access panel fastener bosses, and any structural fastener location where a stripped UNC thread must be brought back to spec. The 7/16-14 UNC thread form is a common coarse-thread fastener size found across a wide range of mechanical assemblies. Installers in HVAC, refrigeration, and mechanical contracting will find this kit appropriate for in-field repairs without returning components to a machine shop.
Designed as an OEM-style thread repair solution for any application using 7/16-14 UNC threaded fasteners in metal housings, including equipment common to HVAC, refrigeration, and mechanical service work.
Thread repair inserts are typically installed by licensed HVAC technicians, plumbers, or journeyman mechanics as part of equipment service or overhaul. Before beginning, de-energize and lock out any equipment being serviced per applicable safety codes. Use the included drill bit to prepare the hole to the correct diameter, then tap with the included tap before driving the insert with the installation tool. Remove the tang with the included tang removal tool after the insert is seated; do not leave the tang in place where it could become a loose contaminant inside the assembly.
