The HELI-COIL 4693-6 is a hand STI (Screw Thread Insert) tap designed to cut internal threads sized for wire thread insert installation. Produced from high speed steel with a bright finish, this tap cuts an M6 x 1 metric coarse thread to a D2 thread limit with 3 flutes for efficient chip evacuation. The bottoming chamfer style allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. With an overall length of 2.72 inches and a thread length of 1.13 inches, it is the correct tooling to prepare holes before driving Heli-Coil or compatible wire inserts in repair and production thread work.
This tap is suited for thread repair and new-hole thread preparation in light manufacturing, maintenance, and field service applications. It performs in aluminum, magnesium, mild steel, and stainless steel workpieces. HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical trades use STI taps when restoring stripped threads in compressor housings, valve bodies, equipment frames, and other tapped components where insert reinforcement is required.
Designed for use in M6 x 1 metric coarse STI thread insert applications. Compatible with aluminum, magnesium, mild steel, and stainless steel workpieces as stated by the manufacturer.
Installation is performed by hand using a tap wrench or T-handle driver. Secure the workpiece before tapping and apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Back the tap off periodically to break chips, particularly in blind holes and when working stainless steel. Always verify hole diameter against the STI drill size chart for M6 x 1 before tapping to ensure proper insert fit.
