The HARVEY TOOL 39878-C3 is a solid carbide spotting drill designed to accurately locate and start holes before a follow-up twist or jobber drill completes the bore. Built to a 140-degree point angle with a Harvey Type I point geometry, it produces a precise cone seat that reduces drill walk and improves positional accuracy on machined workpieces. The cutting diameter measures 0.0781 inches (5/64 inch) with a 1/8-inch straight-cylindrical shank and a spiral two-flute configuration. An AlTiN coating adds surface hardness and heat resistance, extending tool life in ferrous and hardened materials. Overall length is 1.5 inches. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals rely on this geometry for consistent, repeatable spotting in production and prototype environments.
This spotting drill is suited for general-purpose hole preparation on CNC machining centers, knee mills, and drill presses working with steel, stainless, cast iron, and similar materials. The compact 0.0781-inch cutting diameter makes it appropriate for small-bore work, close-tolerance fixturing, and printed circuit board or instrument component machining where precise hole location is critical. The right-hand cutting direction is compatible with standard spindle rotation on virtually all vertical and horizontal milling setups.
Designed as a general-purpose spotting drill for use with standard straight-shank collets, ER collet systems, and drill chucks accepting a 0.125-inch shank diameter.
Installation and use of this tool should be performed by qualified machinists familiar with cutting tool safety. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe state before loading or removing the tool from the collet or chuck. Confirm the shank is fully seated and the collet or chuck is torqued to the toolholder specification before running the spindle. Use appropriate cutting speeds and feeds for the workpiece material — refer to the manufacturer cutting data or a machining handbook for starting parameters when working with carbide tooling.
