The HARVEY TOOL 39870-C3 is a solid carbide spotting drill designed to create precise starter holes for follow-on drilling operations. Built to a 140-degree point angle, it establishes accurate hole location and reduces walking before full-diameter drill engagement. The 2-flute spiral geometry provides clean chip evacuation, and the AlTiN coating improves heat resistance and extends tool life in ferrous and abrasive materials. With a cutting diameter of 0.07 inches and an overall length of 1.5 inches, this tool suits tight-tolerance work in machining, fabrication, and production environments. It is installed and operated by machinists and CNC operators working with drill presses, machining centers, and CNC mills.
This spotting drill is suited for general-purpose applications requiring accurate hole positioning before drilling, countersinking, or tapping. The straight cylindrical shank at 0.125 inches diameter fits standard collet chucks and drill chucks commonly used in CNC and manual machining setups. The 0.21-inch flute length is optimized for shallow spotting passes rather than deep-hole drilling. Typical use cases include production machining on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and other hard materials where the AlTiN finish provides thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds.
Designed as a general-purpose spotting drill compatible with standard straight-cylindrical collet chucks and drill chucks accepting a 0.125-inch shank diameter on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual mills.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC operators. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and machine is powered down or in a safe state before changing tooling. Secure the shank firmly in the collet or chuck to the manufacturer-recommended clamping depth to prevent runout. Use appropriate cutting fluid or dry cutting per material requirements; do not force the tool beyond its rated flute length engagement.
