The H R MANUFACTURING HR-480 is a soft lathe chuck jaw designed with a tongue and groove interface for secure, repeatable workholding on manual and CNC lathes. Machined from 1018 steel, this square-profile jaw measures 5.625 inches overall length and 2 inches overall width. The tongue and groove mount style indexes consistently to the chuck body, reducing setup time between runs. Soft jaws are field-machinable, allowing the technician or machinist to bore the jaw face to match a specific workpiece diameter or profile. At 12 pounds, the jaw offers substantial mass for stable, vibration-dampened cuts.
This jaw is intended for use on lathe chucks with a 15-inch compatible chuck diameter. It fits applications in industrial machine shops, tool rooms, and production turning cells where soft jaw workholding is required. The tongue and groove interface suits chucks that use that specific mount style rather than serrated or T-nut configurations. Mount hole centers are spaced 3 inches apart, and the slot width is 0.75 inches with a groove width of 0.5 inches. Machinists working on repetitive part runs often prefer soft jaws because they can be custom-bored for near-zero runout on matched workpieces.
Designed for lathe chucks with a 15-inch compatible chuck diameter using a tongue and groove jaw interface. Mount hole center distance of 3 inches must match the chuck body bolt pattern before installation.
Installation of lathe chuck jaws should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the lathe fully powered down and locked out per applicable machine safety procedures. Verify that the tongue and groove dimensions and mount hole spacing match the chuck body before assembly. After bolting the jaws in place, soft jaws must be bored in-situ on the lathe to achieve proper concentricity before use on a workpiece. Never exceed the chuck manufacturer's rated RPM with any jaw set installed.
