The H R MANUFACTURING HR-455-A is a soft lathe chuck jaw with a tongue and groove interface, designed for use in metal turning and machining operations. Soft jaws are machinable to exact workpiece profiles, allowing machinists and tool room technicians to hold irregular, delicate, or precision-tolerance parts without marring the surface. This jaw is machined from 6061 aluminum, which cuts easily and stays dimensionally stable after boring. It measures 4-7/8 inches in overall length and 2 inches in overall width, with mount hole centers spaced 2.5 inches apart. At 2.3333 pounds, the jaw is lightweight enough to keep chuck balance manageable at typical lathe speeds.
This jaw is sized for 12-inch diameter chucks with a tongue and groove mounting interface. The tongue and groove design provides positive lateral registration, keeping the jaw indexed repeatably in the chuck body during setup changes. Square jaw geometry suits flat-faced or concentric workholding applications common in production turning, repair shops, and tool rooms. It is sold and installed as a set replacement or single-jaw upgrade on compatible 12-inch lathe chucks. Machinists typically bore soft jaws in-place on the chuck to achieve true concentricity before production runs.
Designed to fit lathe chucks with a 12-inch diameter and a tongue and groove jaw mounting interface. Confirm slot width, groove width, and mount hole spacing against the existing chuck body before installation.
Soft jaws should be installed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician familiar with lathe chuck service. Power down and lock out the lathe before removing or installing any chuck jaw. After bolting the jaw into the chuck, bore the jaw in-place at the intended workholding diameter to establish true concentricity - never use an unbored soft jaw for precision work. Verify jaw seating and fastener torque per the chuck manufacturer's specifications before resuming operation.
