The GWS 315227 is a solid carbide ball end mill designed for precision milling of non-ferrous metals, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium. It features a 1/4 inch cutting diameter, a 3/8 inch length of cut, and three right-hand spiral flutes ground from submicron carbide for a combination of roughing and finishing capability in a single tool. The 37-degree medium helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. An NF1 PVD coating applied to the flutes extends tool life when cutting abrasive and high-temperature alloys. This is a single-end, stub-length tool suited for CNC machining centers and high-speed milling operations.
The 315227 fits typical CNC milling applications in production and job-shop environments where non-ferrous materials such as aluminum, brass, and copper are primary workpiece materials, alongside secondary use in cast iron, superalloys, and titanium. Its 1/4 inch straight-cylindrical shank with h6 tolerance makes it compatible with standard precision collet chucks and end mill holders. The stub-length profile provides rigidity in shallow-to-moderate pocket milling, contouring, and 3D profiling operations where tool deflection must be minimized.
Designed as an OEM-style solid carbide ball end mill for use in CNC machining centers and milling machines equipped with standard 1/4 inch collet chucks or end mill holders; part of the GWS Series 2045 line.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator following the machine tool manufacturer guidelines. Confirm the spindle and tool holder are clean and free of debris before seating the shank. Torque the collet nut or set screw to the holder manufacturer specification using calibrated tooling. Always verify runout with a dial indicator after mounting and before initiating a cutting program.
