The GWS 312038 is a 5-flute solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in demanding metalworking and machining applications. Built from submicron-grade solid carbide and finished with an AlCrO-MAX coating, this end mill delivers extended tool life and thermal resistance at high cutting speeds. It features a 3/16 inch cutting diameter, a 0.2187 inch length of cut, and a 2 inch overall length. The 38-degree right-hand helix promotes efficient chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. Single-end configuration with a square shank makes it a straightforward drop-in for standard toolholders. Machinists and CNC operators working in job shops and production environments are the primary users.
The 312038 suits precision milling operations where tight tolerances and surface finish quality are priorities. Its extended reach geometry makes it well suited for slotting, profiling, and pocketing in difficult-to-access areas. The centercutting capability allows plunge entry without a pre-drilled pilot hole, adding flexibility to programming routines. Common applications include milling of hardened steels, stainless alloys, and other abrasion-resistant materials where standard high-speed steel tooling falls short. Series 2213 positioning places it in GWS standard-length offerings for everyday production use.
Designed as a standard-shank replacement or direct-use square end mill compatible with 3/16 inch collet chucks, end mill holders, and shrink-fit toolholders sized for a 3/16 inch shank diameter.
Installation is performed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and power is locked out before changing tooling. Verify collet or holder bore matches the 3/16 inch shank diameter and that the tool is seated to the full grip depth recommended by the toolholder manufacturer. Do not exceed the toolholder manufacturer's runout specifications, as excessive runout accelerates edge wear on carbide tooling.
