The GWS 311743 is a solid carbide corner radius end mill designed for high-performance metal removal in demanding machining applications. It features a 5/8 inch diameter, a 0.03 inch corner radius, and five flutes arranged in a variable helix configuration to reduce chatter and improve surface finish. The 2-1/8 inch length of cut and long-series overall length of 4 inches give machinists extra reach for deep-pocket and side-wall milling. The FX3 AlCr coating enhances wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. This tool is single-end, center-cutting, and right-hand cutting with a straight cylindrical shank held to h6 tolerance, making it compatible with standard end mill holders.
The 311743 is suited for roughing and finishing operations on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, and cast iron. It is designed for use in CNC machining centers and milling machines where tight tolerances and extended tool life are required. The variable helix and variable index design reduce harmonic vibration, making it appropriate for aggressive cuts in difficult-to-machine materials such as Inconel, 17-4 stainless, and tool steels. The long-series configuration is particularly useful when machining deep cavities or features that standard-length end mills cannot reach.
Designed for use with standard end mill holders. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. Secondary workpiece material is cast iron. Part of the GWS Series 2205 long-series corner radius end mill line.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the spindle fully stopped and the machine in an e-stop or locked-out state per applicable shop safety procedures. Seat the shank fully in the end mill holder and torque the retention fasteners to the holder manufacturer's specification. Inspect the corner radius and flute edges for chips or wear before each use. Do not exceed the cutting parameters recommended for the workpiece material grade and machine spindle rating.
