The GWS 311528 is a solid carbide corner radius end mill designed for high-performance metal removal and finishing in demanding machining environments. It features a 3/8 inch cutting diameter, a 0.02 inch corner radius, and 5 flutes arranged in a variable helix, variable index configuration. The short flute geometry keeps the tool stiff, reducing deflection during aggressive cuts. At 2 inches overall length with a 1/2 inch length of cut, this single-end, center-cutting tool is suited for milling steel, stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, and cast iron on CNC machining centers and manual mills.
This end mill is built for shops running tight-tolerance work in steel and stainless, as well as aerospace-grade superalloys and titanium. The variable helix and variable index geometry reduce harmonic chatter, making it effective for both roughing and finishing passes in a single tool. The straight cylindrical shank with h6 tolerance fits standard end mill toolholders, simplifying setup in production environments. A submicron carbide grade supports edge integrity at elevated cutting temperatures common in hard materials.
Designed for use with standard end mill toolholders. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. Secondary workpiece material is cast iron. UNSPSC Code: 27112803.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the spindle fully stopped and the machine in an e-stop or lockout-tagout state. Seat the shank fully into the toolholder and torque the retention mechanism per the toolholder manufacturer specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before first use, as excessive runout accelerates edge wear and increases chatter risk, particularly with variable helix geometries. Consult the machine tool and toolholder documentation for maximum RPM and clamping requirements.
