The GWS 120551 is a solid carbide corner radius end mill engineered for high-performance material removal and finishing in demanding machining applications. It features a 0.5-inch cutting diameter, a 0.03-inch corner radius, and four flutes with a variable helix and variable index geometry. The variable helix reduces harmonic vibration during cutting, improving surface finish and extending tool life. At 2.5 inches overall length with a 0.5-inch straight cylindrical shank held to h6 tolerance, this tool seats securely in standard end mill toolholders. It is designed for use by machinists and CNC operators running roughing and finishing passes on ferrous and difficult-to-machine materials.
This end mill is suited for machining steel, cast iron, stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials in both roughing and finishing operations. Its centercutting geometry allows plunge entry, adding versatility in slot milling and pocket milling routines. The short length-of-cut configuration provides rigidity at the spindle, making it well matched for applications where tool deflection and chatter are concerns. It is a single-end tool, right-hand cut, right-hand flute spiral, and carries the GWS Series 1030 designation.
Designed for use with standard end mill toolholders. Rated for primary workpiece materials including steel, cast iron, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials, with stainless steel as a secondary material application. Shank diameter is 0.5 inches with h6 tolerance for use in collet chucks, end mill holders, and hydraulic toolholders accepting that size.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the spindle fully stopped and the machine in a locked-out state per shop safety protocols. Confirm toolholder bore diameter and collet size match the 0.5-inch shank before seating. Do not exceed the recommended gauge length overhang for the specific toolholder, as excessive extension reduces rigidity and accelerates wear. Inspect the corner radius and cutting edges for chips or wear before each setup.
