The GUHRING 9039440063500 is a thread forming tap designed for creating internal threads without cutting chips. It uses a cold-forming process to displace material rather than remove it, producing stronger threads with better surface finish. Built from High-Speed Steel-E-CO (cobalt-grade HSS) and coated with TiCN, this tap handles the heat and abrasion demands of production threading in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals. The 1/4-28 UNF thread profile with a 2BX class of fit suits applications requiring a tight, reliable thread tolerance. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes.
This tap is suited for both blind hole and through-hole threading operations in machining and fabrication environments. The TiCN coating extends tool life in abrasive materials including cast iron and stainless steel. With a tapping depth of 1.1811 inches and a thread length of 0.374 inches, it fits standard 1/4-28 UNF fastener applications in light manufacturing, mechanical assembly, and precision component work. The Series 3944 design includes 5 oil grooves to aid lubricant distribution during the forming process, reducing friction and heat buildup at the tap-to-workpiece interface.
Designed for 1/4-28 UNF right-hand thread forming in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals. Material application codes P, M, K, and N confirm suitability across these workpiece categories. Appropriate for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where controlled feed rate and lubrication are maintained.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — do not use standard cut-tap drill sizes, as forming taps require a larger pilot hole. Apply cutting or tapping fluid rated for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless steel or cast iron. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and verify spindle alignment to prevent tap breakage. Follow machine manufacturer feed rate and RPM guidelines for the workpiece material and tap diameter.
