The GUHRING 9039430079380 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile materials without cutting or removing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel (HSS-E-CO) and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap generates threads by displacing material rather than cutting it, producing stronger thread forms with a burnished surface finish. It is configured for a 5/16-18 UNC thread profile with a 2BX class of fit and a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 3 threads, making it well suited for threading blind holes close to the bottom. Overall length is 2.721 inches, thread length is 0.709 inches, and tapping depth reaches 1.378 inches.
This tap is used in production and maintenance machining environments where chip-free threading is required in blind or through-hole applications. Its five oil grooves support external lubrication during the forming process. The H8/H9 thread limit and Series 3943 designation make it a standard selection for shops working with steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals. It is appropriate for CNC tapping centers, rigid tapping setups, and manual tapping in controlled production environments where consistent thread quality is critical.
Rated for use in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals (material application codes P, M, K, N). Suitable for both blind hole and through-hole threading operations. Thread limit H8/H9, Series 3943.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — the recommended hole diameter is larger than a standard cut tap drill for the same thread size; consult a thread forming drill chart before drilling. Use cutting or tapping oil appropriate for the workpiece material, ensuring adequate lubrication through the oil grooves to prevent galling. Power down or de-energize any machine spindle before loading or removing the tap from the holder. Follow shop safety protocols and machine manufacturer guidelines when setting tapping speed and torque limits for rigid tapping cycles.
