The GUHRING 9039160079380 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in steel and similar ferrous materials. It cuts a 5/16-18 UNC right-hand internal thread and is manufactured from HSS-E cobalt high-speed steel for extended tool life in tough materials. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating reduces friction and wear. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in suitable for through-hole applications. With an overall length of 2.721 inches, a thread length of 0.709 inches, and a shank diameter of 0.318 inches, this tap fits standard tap holders used in machining and maintenance environments. It carries a 2B class of fit and a thread limit of H4/H5, producing threads within tight commercial tolerances.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations in steel on manual machines, CNC machining centers, and drill presses. It is commonly used in production and maintenance machining where a 5/16-18 UNC thread is required in ferrous stock. The three-flute spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting action, making it effective in through-hole applications where chip evacuation is critical. No coolant-through capability is required for typical use cases in this size range. It is sold individually and intended for use by machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance professionals.
Designed for through-hole threading of 5/16-18 UNC right-hand threads in steel. Compatible with standard tap holders, collet chucks, and tapping heads sized for a 0.318-inch shank diameter. Part of GUHRING Series 3916.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician following standard tapping procedures. Secure the workpiece fully before beginning the tapping cycle and ensure the tap is properly aligned to avoid thread angle errors or tap breakage. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tool life. When replacing a worn tap, verify thread limit compatibility with the existing H4/H5 specification before resuming production.
