The FIRST ALERT CO400 is a battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm designed for residential installation. It uses an electrochemical CO sensor to detect carbon monoxide concentrations in the air. Electrochemical sensing is widely regarded as the most accurate detection technology for CO alarms. The unit is powered by one 9-volt battery, which is included at the time of purchase. Note that some units ship with two AA batteries instead - the alarm model is identical regardless of battery configuration. A silence and test button, low battery warning indicator, and built-in end-of-life timer round out the core functionality. Licensed electricians, HVAC technicians, and qualified contractors typically handle code-required installations in occupied spaces.
The CO400 is suited for residential and light commercial applications where a self-contained, battery-operated CO alarm is required without hardwired power. It is appropriate for bedrooms, hallways near sleeping areas, and utility rooms housing gas-fired appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, and boilers. Because it requires no wiring, it can be placed quickly in locations where hardwired units are not practical. The alarm is intended for wall or ceiling mounting in standard occupied spaces.
Designed as a standalone battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm suitable for residential and light commercial spaces requiring code-compliant CO detection without hardwired power.
Installation should follow local building codes and the manufacturer instructions included with the unit. NFPA 720 and applicable local codes govern placement requirements for CO alarms, including mounting height and proximity to sleeping areas. Power down any nearby gas appliances before conducting test procedures. Do not install in locations subject to extreme temperature, high humidity, or direct airflow from vents, as these conditions can affect sensor accuracy.
