The FERNOX 155738-005 is a propylene glycol-based anti-freeze protector formulated for closed hydronic heating systems and radiant floor applications. Sold in a 5-gallon drum, this liquid concentrate is rated to protect against freeze damage at temperatures as low as -29 degrees F. The active composition is 80 to 100% propylene glycol with a biocide additive (1,2-Benzisothiazol-3(2H)-One at 0.01 to 0.1%) to inhibit microbial growth within the system. It is installed by licensed HVAC and plumbing technicians during system commissioning or seasonal winterization service.
This anti-freeze protector is suited for residential and light commercial hydronic heating systems, including heated underfloor radiant loops and driveway snowmelt circuits. The propylene glycol formula is commonly specified where incidental contact with potable water is a concern, making it appropriate for systems where food-grade or lower-toxicity glycol is required by code or design. Technicians typically add it to closed-loop water-based systems to prevent pipe and component damage during cold-weather shutdown or low-usage periods.
Designed for use in closed-loop hydronic heating systems, radiant floor heating circuits, and heated driveway snowmelt applications where propylene glycol-based anti-freeze fluid is specified.
Installation should be performed by a licensed HVAC technician or plumber familiar with closed hydronic systems. Shut down the system and relieve pressure before draining or adding fluid to the loop. Consult local mechanical codes and the system manufacturer guidelines for proper glycol concentration ratios relative to the minimum design temperature. Do not mix with incompatible heat transfer fluids without verifying chemical compatibility first.
