The FERMCO 1002-44rc is a Strong Back PVC shielded coupling designed to join dissimilar pipe materials in drain, waste, and vent applications. The shielded design uses a stainless steel outer band to distribute clamping load evenly across the neoprene sleeve, creating a reliable, leak-resistant seal at the joint. Rated for a temperature range of -30 degrees F to 140 degrees F, this coupling handles the thermal cycling common in residential and light commercial drain systems. Licensed plumbers and pipefitters are the primary installers of this fitting type.
This coupling is sized at 4 inches by 4 inches and is designed to connect clay pipe to cast iron, PVC, steel, or lead pipe of the same nominal diameter. It is well suited for repair and retrofit work in older sewer and drain systems where mixed pipe materials are common, as well as new construction where transitions between pipe types are required. The Strong Back shielded construction provides additional structural support at the joint compared to standard mission couplings.
Designed to connect clay pipe to cast iron, PVC, steel, or lead pipe in 4-inch nominal drain, waste, and vent systems.
Installation should be performed by a licensed plumber in accordance with local plumbing codes and the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Shut off flow and relieve any system pressure before beginning work. Ensure pipe ends are clean, debris-free, and cut square before seating the coupling sleeve. The manufacturer specifies a clamp torque of 60 lb-in, which should be achieved using a calibrated torque driver or torque screwdriver.
