The ESAB 693000267 is a 325R ceramic weld backing strip designed to support single-sided fusion welding by providing a consistent backing surface during root pass deposition. Measuring 1-1/4 inches long, 2 inches wide, and 3/8 inches thick, these ceramic tiles hold the molten weld pool in place, preventing burn-through and promoting full-penetration welds without requiring a second-side back-gouge operation. Each box contains 16 pieces and weighs 1 pound. Welding professionals use ceramic backing in structural fabrication, pipe welding, and plate joining applications where access to the back side of the joint is limited or impossible.
Ceramic weld backing strips are a standard consumable in structural steel fabrication shops, shipyards, pressure vessel fabrication, and field welding operations. The 325R profile is suited for use on butt joints and groove welds in flat and horizontal positions. Fabricators, certified welders, and ironworkers install these backings when joint design requires one-sided welding to meet full-penetration requirements. The ceramic material withstands the high heat of GMAW, FCAW, and SMAW root passes without fusing to the base metal, leaving a clean weld root that can be inspected and dressed.
Designed as an OEM-style consumable ceramic weld backing strip for use in single-sided butt joint and groove weld applications across common arc welding processes.
Ceramic weld backing is applied and positioned by a certified welder or fabricator prior to initiating the root pass. Ensure the backing strip is firmly seated against the back face of the joint with no gaps that could allow weld metal leakage. Follow applicable AWS D1.1 or project-specific welding procedure specifications for joint geometry and preheat requirements. Do not reuse backing strips after a completed weld cycle.
