The ESAB 693000234 is a ceramic weld backing strip used to support the weld pool on the root pass of a joint, allowing full-penetration welds to be made from a single side. Each strip measures 1 inch long, 1 inch wide, and 1/4 inch thick. The 215R backing profile conforms to standard joint geometries and holds molten weld metal in place during the root pass, eliminating the need for a backing weld or back-gouging. Licensed welders and certified welding inspectors specify ceramic backing for structural, pipe, and plate applications where access to the back side of the joint is restricted or not possible.
