The EAGLE CUTTING TOOL HT-640-B-I is a 6-40 high-speed steel (HSS) hand bottom tap designed for threading operations that require cutting threads to the bottom of a blind hole. The bottom chamfer on this tap allows it to reach thread depth closer to the base of the hole than a taper or plug tap, making it the final step in a standard three-tap sequence. At 0.31 pounds, it is lightweight and easy to handle with a standard tap wrench. Machinists, pipefitters, and maintenance technicians use this tap when a through-thread pass alone is not enough to complete a blind-hole thread job.
This tap is suited for hand tapping operations in metalworking, fabrication, and maintenance-repair-overhaul (MRO) environments. The 6-40 thread designation means a No. 6 major diameter with 40 threads per inch, a fine-thread specification used in precision fastening applications such as instrument panels, small enclosures, and light mechanical assemblies. It is appropriate for use in steel, aluminum, brass, and similar materials at the discretion of the operator based on material hardness and feed rate.
Designed as a standard hand bottom tap for use in any application requiring a 6-40 UNF thread, compatible with standard tap wrenches and T-handle drivers sized for No. 6 taps.
This tap is intended for hand tapping and should be used with a properly sized tap wrench to maintain alignment and control torque. Secure the workpiece before tapping and apply a suitable cutting fluid to reduce heat and extend tap life. Back the tap off periodically to break chips and clear the flutes, especially in deeper blind holes. Follow applicable shop safety practices when working with cutting tools.
