The EAGLE CUTTING TOOL HT-540-P-D is a 5-40 hand plug tap ground from high-speed steel (HSS) and manufactured in the USA. Plug taps feature a tapered lead of roughly 3 to 5 threads, making them the standard starting choice when threading through holes or when sufficient thread engagement allows a gradual entry. This tap is designed for cutting internal threads by hand in materials such as mild steel, aluminum, brass, and plastics. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance professionals reach for this tap when precision thread quality and tool longevity are the priority over disposable import tooling.
The HT-540-P-D cuts a 5-40 Unified National Coarse (UNC) thread profile, which is common in small fastener applications across electronics, instrumentation, precision assemblies, and light mechanical components. It is suited for use in job shops, maintenance facilities, and production environments where hand tapping small-diameter threads is a regular task. This tap is driven with a standard tap wrench and is appropriate for both new thread cutting and thread repair applications.
Designed as a standard hand plug tap for use wherever a 5-40 UNC internal thread is required. Compatible with any standard tap wrench sized for small-diameter taps.
This tap is intended for hand operation using a tap wrench — do not use in a power driver without confirmed tap-driver compatibility. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Back off the tap periodically to break chips and prevent binding, especially in blind holes. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, as small-diameter taps are susceptible to breakage under side load or overforce.
